This interactive workshop focuses on gender identity, the language we use, and opportunities to practice—all through the lens of dog behavior professions. When we work with pets, we work with people, and people have a variety of identities and experiences. Supporting people enables us to fully support their pets and work towards the best outcomes possible. This workshop aims to clarify language, build skills, and prepare you to better support the families you work with. Activities will involve reflection and skill-building in a supportive environment. While our examples are tailored for dog behavior professionals, the content is beneficial for anyone interested in learning more! No matter your background, we would love to have you join us! Learning Objectives: Participants will: 1) Discriminate between gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and sex assigned at birth. 2) Identify inclusive alternatives to common problematic terms. 3) Recognize the impact of using inclusive language. 4) Identify at least one change to enhance inclusivity.
