My training goal was to free-shape my beagle, Piper, to stand with his front paws on the rim of a child's basketball net, and drop a ball into that basket on the verbal cue "slam dunk". I wanted to demonstrate the following practices that are consistent with Karen Pryor-style clicker training: back chaining, shaping in small increments, absence of talking, prompts or lures, short sessions, relaxing previous criteria when new criteria are introduced, high rate of reinforcement, increase to a higher value reinforcer with increasing difficulty of the task, and consideration for the emotional state of the dog.
